The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, in partnership with GIZ, have hosted the AYA Innovation Challenge, marking a renewed national drive to strengthen patient self-care through technology and community-focused innovation.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Dr. Hafez Adam Taher said the theme, “Designing the Future of Patient Self-Care,” reflects Ghana’s urgent need to empower citizens to better manage their health, particularly as cases of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension continue to rise.

He praised the AYA Innovation Challenge for encouraging practical solutions that enhance collaboration between patients and the health system.

The Public Health Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, emphasized on the need to adopt new, smarter and more efficient approaches to reduce the rising morbidity and mortality associated with the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, during his opening remark.

The event showcased software developers pitching digital tools designed to improve self-care for non-communicable diseases.

The winning innovation, selected by a panel from the Ministry and Ghana Health Service, will receive funding and guided support toward integration into the national health system, boosting Ghana’s drive for locally developed health technologies.
