The government has announced plans to renovate Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 2 into a multipurpose terminal as part of efforts to reduce congestion and improve passenger experience, particularly during peak travel hours.

Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transport, reported this during his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, January 13.

He explained that Terminal 3, which handles the majority of international flights, experiences severe congestion in the evenings, whilst Terminal 2 stays comparatively underutilised over the same period.

“We experience a lot of congestion in the evenings at Terminal 3. We have Terminal 2 that is not that busy when it gets to peak hours,” the minister remarked.

Joseph Nikpe stated that the government intends to build a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 in order to rectify the imbalance.

He clarified that this will relieve congestion on Terminal 3 by enabling the sharing of foreign passengers between the two terminals.

He stated, “The mind is to do a connecting concourse between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 just to facilitate the movement of our international passengers so that we can share the Terminal 2 with Terminal 3 for our international passengers.”

The project is set to be implemented in 2026 and has been designated as a high-priority government endeavour, according to the minister.

When finished, facility 2 will serve both domestic and international flights and function as a multipurpose facility.

“It is a high government priority project which will bring some kind of comfort to our international passengers. Terminal 2 will now be a multipurpose terminal for domestic and international,” according to Mr Nikpe.
