Serwaa Amihere, a lawyer and media personality, has issued an apology in reaction to a growing public controversy.
The Management of Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, denounced comments attributed to her, branding the school as a “breeding ground for homosexuals.”
The school’s statement, issued on January 17, 2026, was clear: “Management unequivocally condemns this statement. It is false, reckless, and highly disrespectful,” adding that the remark was “an irresponsible generalisation that maligns our students, undermines our institution’s credibility, and seeks to attach a stigma to a school with a proud legacy.”
The statement drew intense criticism, causing Amihere to publicly apologise.
“I apologise to everyone who has felt slighted by the comments, especially the PRESEC community and the PRESECANS. I apologise, and I assure you that it won’t happen again,” she stated.
This apology comes after PRESEC’s comprehensive justification of its eight-decade legacy.
The school stressed its founding as a Presbyterian mission institution “governed by firm Christian values” committed to “academic excellence, character development, discipline, leadership, and the moral upbringing of young men.”
It referred to the claim as a “gross misrepresentation” of its ethos.
In Ghana, where same-sex activity is illegal and public opinion is still mainly negative, the dispute sprang out amid a heightened national dialogue on LGBTQI issues.
Recent discussions were ignited by an unapproved teacher training handbook that raised concerns about LGBTQI ideas being taught in classrooms. The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service vehemently denied this.
The management of PRESEC positioned its response in this delicate context, claiming that such “harmful” remarks unjustly “expose young students to ridicule, prejudice, and emotional harm” and tarnish the school’s reputation.
The statement firmly concluded, “PRESEC will not accept or normalise such characterisations.”
