Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary, calling it as a powerful reinforcement of Ghana’s democratic identity and religious plurality.

Dr. Bawumia won a hotly contested primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, defeating four other candidates to gain the party’s nomination.

He praised the NPP for holding a peaceful congress, encouraging party members to consider it as an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to internal democracy, constitutional order, and interfaith cooperation.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 2, the Chief Imam also congratulated the other contestants for yielding in a spirit of unity and peace, stating that their actions demonstrated political maturity and respect for democratic norms.

He emphasised that although strategies for internal party elections may vary, the common goal of advancing the country must always come first.

His Eminence also praised the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission for their “transparency, accountability, and objectivity in the conduct of the primary, contributing to the process’s credibility.”

“Democracy is a civic obligation and a shared responsibility,” his Eminence stated, And when we all play our roles effectively in pursuit of democratic prosperity, in the end, we will not remember the discomfort of our individual struggles, but the comfort of our collective success.”
