A citywide cleanup initiative called “Ghana@69 Clean-up” has been established by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) with the goal of maintaining the civic spirit and sense of communal duty sparked by Ghana’s 69th Independence celebrations.
As part of the March 2026 National Sanitation Day (NSD), the exercise will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026, beginning at 6:00 a.m. and continuing until all activities are finished, according to the American Medical Association.

Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District (CBD), Tuesday Market, Chemu Naa, Kaneshie, and Kwame Nkrumah Interchange are just a few of the hotspots in the city where the cleanup will concentrate on intensive cleaning operations, according to a press release signed by Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, on Thursday.
As part of efforts to improve environmental conditions and lower the risk of flooding, the Assembly explained that the day’s activities would include desilting and cleaning drains, sweeping streets and alleyways, removing unauthorised posters and banners, and general cleaning of markets, truck parks, and other public areas.
To support the Assembly’s efforts, the AMA invited locals, market leaders, transportation unions, community organisations, and institutions to plan comparable sanitation events in their communities.
The AMA stated that it will send out Public Health Officers, also known as “Sama-Sama,” together with the Sanitation Taskforce, sweepers, and janitors throughout all sub-metros, along with the required supplies and equipment, to help with the day’s events.

The Assembly reminded the public that refusing to participate in communal labour or disobeying sanitation regulations are crimes that, upon summary conviction, carry a fine of up to 100 penalty units, a minimum sentence of 30 days in jail, a maximum sentence of six months in jail, or both. Additionally, persistent offenders face additional daily penalties.
In order to further its goal of transforming Accra into a smart and sustainable city, the AMA reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with stakeholders.
