Rising hostilities between the Israel Defence Forces and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon resulted in a missile attack on the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The base was struck between 17:45 and 17:52 local time, according to a statement released by the Ghana Armed Forces on Friday, March 6. Two Ghanaian soldiers were critically injured, and one officer experienced psychological distress.
Additionally, the Officers’ Mess in the camp was totally destroyed by fire as a result of the attack.
“The injured personnel are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable. Arrangements are being made for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for further care,” the statement added.
Ghanaians were reassured by the military that other soldiers, who had sought refuge in underground bunkers due to the unstable security situation, were still secure.
In the meantime, the Ghanaian government, via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has formally protested at the UN headquarters in New York, calling on all parties involved in the UNIFIL operational area to fulfil their commitments to safeguard peacekeepers.
