A South African national was detained by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for trying to smuggle more than thirty kilogrammes of cannabis into Ghana.

After intelligence led to a comprehensive check of his luggage, NACOC officials were able to detain the suspect, who had arrived on a flight from Thailand.
His personal possessions contained vacuum-sealed packets that were used to securely hide the cannabis.

Surprisingly, an airline employee at KIA was also taken into custody for allegedly helping the suspect evade standard security procedures.

Preliminary findings, according to NACOC officials, point to a concerted attempt by the foreign person and the airline employee to sneak the illegal narcotic into the nation.

At the moment, both suspects are being held and helping with continuing investigations.

The Commission has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking and reassured the public that strict procedures are still in place to identify and stop such activities.

Regardless of nationality or status, NACOC further cautioned that anyone found participating in drug-related offences will be subject to the full force of the law.
