The Gbese District Court has released Abu Trica and two others, according to legal activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

“Just finished at the Gbese District Court,” he wrote in a post that was uploaded following the court appearance. “Abu Trica and two others have been discharged. NACOC just tried to rearrest them inside the courtroom. The judge was offended.”

He argues that tension in the courtroom resulted from the attempt to rearrest the suspects shortly after the court’s ruling.

In a related event, his main attorney had previously clarified that the court had already addressed a crucial jurisdictional legal question. This came after his initial court appearance, when he was refused bail.

According to the lawyer, “The preliminary legal objection was about which court should hear the application, based on territorial jurisdiction. The court confirmed it is properly seized of the matter and vacated the objection.”

The case is not yet at the point where the extradition request’s content would be investigated, he continued.

He said, “We will return on January 13, 2026, for the court to consider the formal application on jurisdiction before any examination of the merits.”

Kumi was arrested on December 11, 2025, as part of a combined operation between Ghanaian and US law enforcement agencies.

He is suspected of running an online romance fraud scheme that allegedly targeted elderly victims in the United States, resulting in millions of dollars of losses.

According to court filings, a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Ohio indicted him on wire fraud and conspiracy counts. Prosecutors allege that he orchestrated the plan and laundered the cash.
