Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey has joined the nation in mourning the loss of Environment, Science, and Technology Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and six other people who perished in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Speaking right away after the news emerged, the mayor called the occurrence one of the saddest days in Ghana’s recent history and called it a heartbreaking moment for the country.
“This is a monumental loss for our dear nation. We have lost visionary leaders, loyal public servants, and gallant compatriots who gave their all in service to Ghana,” the Mayor said.
The Mayor gave a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Murtala Mohammed, recalling how he worked closely with the AMA to identify solutions for the city’s expanding plastic waste problem. They also mentioned that they had recently started planning to carry out ambitious city-wide initiatives that would reduce single-use plastics and encourage sustainable waste management.
“His passion for the environment and his commitment to green innovation were inspiring. We had started working on concrete actions to transform Accra into a cleaner and environmentally friendly city. His passing is a major blow to our collective fight for environmental sustainability,” the Mayor lamented.
He emphasized that Dr. Omane Boamah was a leader of tremendous discipline and foresight and that his leadership at the Ministry of Defense improved civil-military ties and national security.
Speaking about the six other people who died, including security guards, the AMA chief emphasized that their sacrifices would be regarded as brave and patriotic deeds.
The President of the Republic, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ministries impacted by the tragedy, the families of the deceased, and Ghanaians in general received Mayor Allotey’s sincere sympathies.
He pointed out that all Ghanaian flags, including the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) flag, were flying at half-mast in accordance with national mourning customs as a show of respect and solidarity with the families of the departed and the country as a whole.
