Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has promised journalists that under his direction, Parliament will not pass legislation intended to stifle media activity.
On Monday, December 23, La Dade-Kotopon MP and Deputy Minister for Local Government Rita Naa Odoley Sowah gave a speech on his behalf at the Ghana Journalists Association’s Third Annual Dinner Night in Accra.
Mr. Bagbin recognised growing worries that rules pertaining to digital and electronic communications are being enforced in a way that undermines press freedom and intimidates journalists. He promised to evaluate any laws that were discovered to violate media rights.
His comments come at a time when the media community is becoming increasingly uneasy about arrests, questioning, and legal actions connected to internet reporting and opinion by journalists.
At the occasion, a number of practitioners related stories that they claimed were directly related to their work responsibilities.
Although responsible journalism is crucial, the GJA argued that regulations shouldn’t weaken the press’s fundamental rights.
Mr. Bagbin emphasised that an independent and brave media continues to be essential to Ghana’s democracy and that democratic administration depends on striking a balance between freedom of expression and national security.
