No matter the educational background of an Asante; he or she would on any occasion prefer to use Asante Twi. But then make no mistake; the same person could be as fluent in the Colonial Master’s language just as the Colonial Masters.
The castigations and name-calling; the branding of people who frequently expressed themselves in the Twi Language as “Villagers”; illiterates, Kumasi-people, and the worst of them all; Kokoasefoɔ never bothered these determined Asantes to drum home their desire to develop and advance through the use of their own language.
Our forebears: just like with many advanced and developed societies; in their wisdom thought it wise to cherish and express themselves through their own language.
Fast forward; Asante Twi has become the most preferred medium of communication in Ghana in all aspects of the economy and broadcast; particularly from Electronic, Traditional and New media. There is not a single video or commentary done on social media that has gone viral without the use of Asante Twi.
There is not a Single Nation on this Planet which has developed without using its own Language. For example: The Japanese, German, British, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, Koreans, and even the Chinese.
Our Asante forebears, though it wasn’t in the technological age for them to forecast such future instances with ease; still in their God-given wisdom saw it prudent to use one’s own language as a medium to advance in life. The use of one’s language affords the person not just to be able to express him/herself without hindrances, but also to be able to think and come up with meaningful ideas.
This has led many: to more than often identify persons; who use the Asante Twi as Asantes, though they might be from another Tribe.
When many Tribes are complaining about the diminishing prospects of their Languages and Culture: Asantes can proudly say to themselves, WE HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB AND WE AIN’T STOPPING”
If speaking Asante Twi is tantamount to illiteracy, then I am a proud “villager” and a proud “kookoaseni” because; Asante Twi Any day, Any time, Anywhere…..😉😇
There is nothing special than when you’ve travelled to a place and it’s so easy and free to express yourself because your language has already travelled before you.
