According to Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault and head of the Renault-Nissan alliance, self-driving vehicles will debut this year. The cars will be equipped with a technology termed “single-lane control,” which will allow them to travel independently on highways without changing lanes.
Renault-Nissan will also release a smartphone app this year that will allow consumers to interact with their cars remotely, such as adjusting music or the temperature.
By 2018, Ghosn expects the alliance to begin offering vehicles with “multiple-lane control,” which means they can change lanes on highways and maneuver through heavy traffic automatically. By 2020, the alliance will have automobiles capable of driving themselves through city intersections and heavy traffic.
Several firms are working on self-driving vehicles and technology that allows customers to operate their automobiles from their cellphones, including Tesla Motors (TSLA.O) and Google Inc (GOOGL.O).
