Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, a former Energy Minister in Nana Addo’s previous administration, has formally declared his desire to run for National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a press release on Tuesday, September 30, Agyarko stated that the decision was made after extensive consultation with close allies and family members.

“I have had consultations with members of my family and those who are very close to me, and whose lives would be most affected by the decision I make”, he said.

After carefully considering what the vast majority of the party, as well as many outside the NPP, are requesting of him, Boakye Agyarko went on to characterise the action as a “call to duty.”

“Having factored in all the considerations, I see it as my bounden duty to respond to this call to duty and hereby announce that I will contest for the position of National Chairman of my party upon the opening of nominations” the statement announced.

The former minister is the first prominent member of the NPP to formally announce his intention to run for office.

Nonetheless, there are increasing signs within the party that John Boadu, the immediate former general secretary of the NPP, is also putting on his boots for the chairmanship.

Ahead of the general elections in 2028, the biggest opposition is in the midst of a crucial phase of party structure restructuring.
