The spot where a bolt driver committed himself after the accident killed five of his passengers. A bolt driver committed himself by hanging himself from a tree on Alma Road in Welkom, Free State, after his bus rolled over and killed at least six passengers.
The male driver, who was 31 years old, was discovered hanging from a tree with a safety belt he had pulled from the seat belts of the bolt seats, according to Mondli Mvambi, a spokeswoman for the Free State department of health.
When the bolt driver realized how badly the other people were harmed, he decided to commit himself. “We concluded he felt responsible for the deaths and finally took the choice to take his own life,” Mvambi said.
Mvambi reported that the driver was informed of the passengers’ deaths while communicating with emergency medical care workers. He then went someplace else, out of sight, to hang himself later.
Mvambi also revealed that before the incident, passengers complained to emergency authorities that the driver was engaged in a fight with a few passengers who believed the route was wrong.
“They said the driver drove the incorrect way, and that during the altercation, the driver collided with the pavement, causing the vehicle to flip,” he explained. “They also claimed that the driver collided with the pavement, causing the vehicle to topple.”
According to Mvambi, the bolt went over at about 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, killing five people and injuring one, one of whom is in severe condition.
“The bolt was coming from Durban, stopping at Welkom, and then moving to Bloemfontein,” he said.
Three of the seven were declared dead at the site, while the other two died later at the hospital, according to Mvambi. Three little children were among the fatalities.
