Ernest Akushey, a Ghanaian boxer best known by his ring nickname “Bahubali,” passed away in the Bukom Boxing Arena just 11 days after his final match, raising fresh questions regarding safety regulations in the sport.

The 32-year-old super middleweight fighter lost to Jacob Dickson in the eighth round of their eagerly awaited September 12, 2025, bout.

Following what his manager, Shatta Roco, told the Chorkor Jamaica Facebook Channel was a brief illness, he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the LEKMA Hospital in Teshie, Accra.

Akushey was on medication after a doctor diagnosed him with malaria following the Dickson bout, despite Shatta Roco’s insistence that he was totally fit prior to his most recent battle.

But when the combatant was taken to the hospital yesterday, he added, the doctors found a number of other problems.

Akushey contested eight professional fights and won six of them. He also competed in the light heavyweight division.

Born in Chorkor and trained at the Wadada Gym in James Town, he gained praise from fans for his ability to take a beating and his occasionally wild fighting style.

His passing has rekindled discussion about the risks associated with recurrent punishment in the ring.

Joshua Clottey, a former IBF welterweight champion, had publicly warned him against taking part in too many brutal fights after Dickson defeated him.

In a video that went viral following the altercation, Clottey said, “He may not feel the effects of the punishment now, but he will suffer the impact later in life.”

Ghana’s boxing community has been rocked by Akushey’s unexpected death, which highlights the dangers of the sport once more.
