President John Dramani Mahama has been encouraged by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference to take the lead in combating illegal mining, or galamsey, by prosecuting high-profile criminals.

Bishops told the President during a meeting with CSOs at the Jubilee House on Friday, October 3, that the government needs to do more than simply talk when it comes to taking concrete action against the powerful individuals causing the threat.

We implore you, Your Excellency, to establish more precise criteria that will establish an emergency. Kingpins, even those mentioned in official reports, are being prosecuted publicly.

Performance metrics that can be measured for security services and local government agencies. safeguarding traditional authorities and communities that oppose galamsey.

The Bishops sought accountability for those involved in the crime.

The Bishops emphasised that no one should be seen as above the law and warned that Ghana’s natural resources and citizens’ safety were in danger.

“Our people must see that no one is above the law. We are with you in this fight, and we urge you to act with courage and moral clarity.

“History will not measure your leadership by words alone, but by the protection you secured for generations yet unborn. Our house is on fire; let’s put it out,” the Bishops said.
