Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also referred to as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally announced his intention to run for the party’s National Chairman.
Chairman Wontumi stated in a declaration of intent dated February 4, 2026, that he made his choice after consulting with youth and party elders. He emphasised that his quest is motivated by the desire to unite, strengthen, and rebuild the NPP at what he called a crucial juncture in its history.
“Our party has faced challenges and learned hard lessons along the way. At this critical moment, the NPP demands leadership that is steady, principled, and committed to unity,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi stated that his offer to serve is motivated by a desire to empower the grassroots, rebuild party trust, and set up the NPP for success in the 2028 general elections rather than by personal ambition.
He highlighted the necessity of bold and decisive leadership, pointing out that the path ahead would call for vision, selflessness, and unflinching resolve.
“The road ahead will demand vision, courage, and unwavering determination. Leadership at this moment requires bravery, the courage to stand firm, make difficult decisions, and the willingness to lose all if necessary for the NPP,” the statement read.
He referred to himself as a grassroots leader who cherishes all party members, from the most ardent to the youngest, and vowed to strive for organisational cohesion and strength.
“We are ready,” said Chairman Wontumi, expressing confidence in the party’s future preparation. “We are organized. We are built for the battle ahead.”
In closing, he urged party members to unite and declared that the NPP would “rise again – together.”
He closed by offering prayers for the party, Ghana’s democracy, and the country.
When the party opens the nomination process for the National Chairmanship, Chairman Wontumi, who is now the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, is anticipated to formally submit his name.
