A war between the people of Doba and Kandiga in the Upper East region of Ghana appears to have no end anytime soon. The conflict between the two communities which were hitherto living harmoniously has crumbled after countless efforts by prominent people and reputable organizations to bring an end to it.
The recent spark could be largely blamed on the unprovoked attack and killing of a man from Kandiga who many years ago migrated to Kologo, a neighboring community to Kandiga. The killers after executing the heinous crime proceeded on sporadic shooting compelling the men from Kandiga to respond with gun fire.
The intervention of the police and the military detachment at Kandiga Junction could not completely bring the situation under control. The gun battle continued until night fell. It is reported also that, both sides of the conflict have recorded casualties including the death of at least 7 young men altogether from the war front.
Today’s clash is particularly worrying in that, the two chiefs, Doba Chief and Kandiga Chief were invited to a meeting with the High court Judge in Bolga. The Paramount Chief of Navrongo as well as the Paramount Chief of Mirigu were also invited and participated in the deliberations. The two Chiefs both expressed their willingness to cooperate to end the war. Unfortunately, the killing of the Kandiga man has directly undermined the processes and the terms and conditions that were agreed upon at the meeting with the High court Judge.
As it stands now, the long held position by the Kandiga people that, the Doba people have always been the aggressors and have orchestrated many of the attacks has gained grounds. They have been largely vindicated! Maybe, the authorities who must play a role to ensure lasting peace returns to the two communities, must take interest in this recent attack and therefore know the best approach to adopt.
It is my fervent prayer that, the God of Abraham and Jacob will intervene to calm down tempers and return peace to the two communities.
