Fire Guts Sefwi Dwinase Central Market. Read here
On Tuesday evening, a fire completely destroyed the Sefwi Dwinase Central Market in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region, burning items worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.
The fire’s origin is still a mystery, though. Two (2) living rooms and more than eight (8) timber and metal buildings were set on fire.
The Western North Regional Capital’s Sefwi Wiawso’s Sefwi Dwinase Market serves as the area’s primary commercial hub, however market traders and women find it difficult to conduct business there.
Even though the City Assembly is building some new shops for the vendors, problems with cleanliness and hygiene continue to exist, leaving the shopkeepers uneasy.
The incident which occured on the wee hours of Tuesday, after the traditional Tuesday market, February 28, 2023 remains unclear what triggered the cause of the fire.
An eyewitness accounted that the fire started from one of the stores before spreading to other parts of the structures.
Some of the items destroyed were clothes, assorted drinks, plantain among others.
Sefwi Wiawso Fire Service Commander, D02 Joseph Amehere said their office received a distress call at around 9:10pm and dispatched the water tender with six personnel to the scene within three minutes.
He said that more buildings were still being affected by the fire.
Nonetheless, they made every effort to put out the fire and managed to do so about 11:20 p.m.
Agyeman Bediako, the NADMO Director for the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, announced that the Fire Service and the Police, as well as his office, will conduct a forensic inquiry to determine the cause of the incident.
Also, he advised market store owners to utilize high-quality, appropriate electrical materials for their wiring.
In order to prevent such catastrophic catastrophes, he also exhorted them to quit overloading the connections.
