Five new ambassadors have been sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama, who has charged them with representing Ghana overseas with an emphasis on results-driven diplomacy that advances the nation’s objectives for economic development and progress.
During Monday, February 9’s ceremony at the Jubilee House, President Mahama called on the envoys to go beyond their regular diplomatic duties and explore more meaningful engagement, urging them to align their work with what he called a national “reset agenda.”
“As heads of mission, you are expected to reflect this reset by moving from passive representation to purposeful engagement, from routine reporting to proactive problem-solving, and from mere presence to real impact,” he said.
The President emphasised that the effectiveness of Ghana’s overseas missions, especially in the field of economic diplomacy, must be evaluated by how well they further the country’s development goals.
The ambassadors who were just sworn in are:
- Alhaji Said Saleh Sinare, Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
- Lt. Col. Al Hajj Umar Sanda Ahmed, Ambassador to the Republic of Mali
- Mr. Kofi Attor, Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba
- Mr. Emmanuel Opeku, Ambassador-in-Situ
- Mrs. Regina Appiah-Sam, High Commissioner to the Republic of Malta
President Mahama pointed out that in the current global context, diplomacy requires more than just ceremonial responsibilities.
He said ambassadors are supposed to actively look for commercial possibilities in Ghana, improve bilateral trade, and foresee obstacles that can jeopardise the interests of the nation.
“Your mission plans must be firmly aligned with Ghana’s development priorities,” he continued.
