GA EAST NCCE HOLDS CITIZENSHIP WEEK CELEBRATION; CHILDREN ARE AGENTS OF CHANGE IN PEACE-BUILDING – DR. MARTHA OPARE HAMMOND

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) of the Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA) on Friday, 3rd June 20, 2023 organized a programme to mark Citizen Week Celebration (CWC) at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Zimmerman Congregation, Abokobi.

This year’s celebration was under the theme: “30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy And Building National Cohesion; The Role of the Ghanaian Child’’.

The Citizen Week Celebration is specifically designed to feature eminent personalities who are considered worthy role models in society to interact and impact virtues of good citizenship to pupils across the country. The goal of this year’s celebration was to reach out to 8080 schools across Ghana.

In the Ga East Municipality, over 500 school children from some selected public basic schools were brought together at the Zimmerman Presbyterian Church where the programme was officially launched.

The Resource Person for the occasion was Dr. Mrs. Martha Opare-Hammond, who stood in for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga East Municipal Assembly, Hon. Elizabeth Kaakie Mann.

Dr. Mrs. Martha Opare-Hammond, who is the Marriage Registrar of the Assembly and a certified Counselor, charged parents and guardians, as well as teachers, to help train and nurture children in the manner that will help identify, develop and fully realize their potentials for the benefit of their families and the nation at large.

“As the Commission celebrates 30 years of consolidating our democratic gains and national unity, it is important to reinforce civic values in children with the aim to reorient their attitude toward playing a more positive roles in our democratic journey. Children are a spring of life and an extraordinary blessing to any nation. They are our future leaders and agents of change in peace-building hence the NCCE’s strategy and slogan of ‘catch them young’”.

She advised the children to have positive mindset and behaviour towards the environment and not engage in practices that will harm it, leading to climate change.

“We expect you to be disciplined, take your studies seriously and show love for the nation. If you love the nation, you won’t put up bad behaviour that will harm our environment, waterbodies, and others, by polluting them with plastic materials and sachet water rubbers”, she remarked.

Dr. Martha Opare-Hammond, together with the Ga East NCCE Director, Mrs. Jemima Mensah, engaged the pupils in a series of activities including displaying and identifying pictures of some Ghanaian celebrities who are considered role models.
