Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Africa fully owns its artificial intelligence (AI) future, with the Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations delivering the keynote address on behalf of the sector Minister, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), at TechExpo Africa 2025 at the Accra Digital Centre.
Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu emphasised that the continent should not be a passive consumer of AI innovations developed elsewhere.
During his presentation on “The Future of AI in Africa: Who Holds the Power to Decide?”, he emphasised the importance of African governments taking active efforts to shape AI development, deployment, and governance across the continent.
He emphasised Ghana’s advancements under President John Dramani Mahama, pointing out continuous initiatives to improve e-governance, increase internet access, and strengthen digital inclusion across the country.

He also cited Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which offers a thorough framework for responsible innovation in line with national priorities, data security, privacy protection, and ethical AI research.
The Deputy Minister advocated for improved regulatory frameworks, increased cooperation between government, business, academia, and development partners, and more support for regional innovators.
He pointed out that investing in domestic AI solutions, encouraging algorithm openness, and making sure citizens are involved in determining the moral bounds of AI use are all essential to Africa’s technological sovereignty.

Hon. Sukparu described TechExpo Africa as a model platform where local talent meets global expertise to produce sustainable digital solutions, further acknowledging the critical role of the African diaspora in propelling the continent’s technology advancement.
In closing, he urged stakeholders to commit to creating an AI future based on African principles, equity, innovation, and shared prosperity through African-led collaboration through organisations like the African Union and ECOWAS.
