At the 135th Council Meeting of the International Maritime Organisation (C 135) in London on Wednesday, Ghana’s recent humanitarian donation of GH¢10 million to hurricane-stricken Jamaica, Cuba, and conflict-ridden Sudan was recognised and praised.
The praise came after a statement made by Naval Captain (rtd) Kamal-Deen Ali, Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), who said that it was a sign of Ghana’s strong solidarity, respect, and fraternity for the victims of the impacted nations and that “by so doing, we exhibit the unique attribute that connects us as one people.”
President John Dramani Mahama received praise for his humanitarian assistance to the impacted nations.
President Mahama recently delivered GH¢10 million in humanitarian aid to hurricane-stricken Jamaica and Cuba, as well as to conflict-ridden Sudan on behalf of the government and Ghanaians.
50% of the humanitarian supplies are to go to Jamaica, 30% to Cuba, and 20% to Sudan.
2,400 bags of Ghana rice, 540 bags of sugar, 377 medicine boxes, 500 beds, 500 pillows, 100 cartons of gari mix, and 50,000 t-shirts are among the items.
The remaining items include ten emergency portal toilets, twenty 500-liter water tanks, twenty hand wash stations, three 20-foot containers of chocolate products, and other clothing.
Then, on Tuesday night at the 80th anniversary celebration of the Manchester Declaration, also known as the Fifth Pan-African Congress, in Accra’s Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, President Mahama declared that Ghana would send soldiers from the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to help rebuild Jamaica’s damaged areas after the recent hurricane.
Following the widespread destruction caused by recent strong storms on the Caribbean island, the team, which will consist of men and women with expertise in engineering, masonry and carpentry, will assist in building temporary shelters for the Jamaican people. They have also appealed to African countries to provide immediate humanitarian aid to Jamaica.
