Ghana Card will be required for all insurance transactions starting in 2026

With effect from January 1, 2026, the National Insurance Commission (NIC) announced that the Ghana card would be required in order to acquire and renew auto and other insurance policies.

The Commission stated in a notification that before any transaction can be completed, any person looking for insurance services must provide a valid Ghana card.

Corporate companies must disclose their Tax Identification Number (TIN) while participating in automobile insurance transactions, according to the rule.

The NIC argues that the policy is a component of initiatives to improve claims handling and bolster Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) procedures in the insurance industry.

The commission anticipates the new regulation will help reduce fraud and align Ghana’s insurance sector with global financial services norms.

The Bank of Ghana’s guidelines, which mandate the Ghana card for bank deposits and other financial activities, are one example of such regulatory measures already implemented in the financial industry.
