In reaction to coordinated military operations against Iran by the United States and Israel that have severely deteriorated regional security, Ghana has started to evacuate some of its Embassy staff in Tehran and has triggered an emergency response plan for its citizens throughout the Middle East.
The development was announced in a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
The government “initiated the evacuation of a number of staff of the Embassy of Ghana in Tehran,” according to the statement, while keeping necessary staff to continue offering consular services to Ghanaians who are still in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The move comes in the wake of intensifying military confrontations between Iran, Israel, and the United States that have caused airspace closures, aircraft disruptions, and increased security alerts in a number of Gulf states.
The Ministry claims that after the strikes targeted locations inside Iran, Tehran retaliated by attacking US and Israeli military installations throughout the Gulf, especially in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Many Ghanaian workers, traders, and scholars reside in these nations.
Concerns over possible evacuation routes in the event that the situation worsens have been highlighted by the resulting disruption to civilian air traffic.
Ghanaians living in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates were advised by the Ministry to stay indoors whenever possible, follow local authorities’ instructions to the letter, stay away from crowds and sensitive areas, and always have access to their travel documents.
Additionally, citizens were advised to keep a close eye on official correspondence and stay in touch with the Ghanaian diplomatic post that is closest to them.
According to the statement, Ghanaian citizens are advised by the Ministry to refrain from making unnecessary trips to and from the Middle East.
The Ghanaian government urged the US, Israel, and Iran to “exercise restraint, de escalate, and return to diplomatic engagement in the interest of protecting lives, ensuring economic stability, and lasting regional peace” in the same statement, which also called on the parties to lower tensions.
The Ministry affirmed that diplomatic missions are still on hand to offer support and that emergency consular lines have been opened for Ghanaians in the area. It also stated that evaluations on any additional evacuations are still in progress.
The government has not revealed the entire number of Ghanaians living in the impacted nations at the time this article was filed.
