Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe has stated that Ghana’s transportation system needs constant improvement, especially in road safety infrastructure and enforcement.
The lack of specific traffic signs and signals for motorcyclists has long been a problem, the Minister remarked on Monday, December 22, on Channel One TV’s The Point of View.
He mentioned that the government intends to implement new road safety measures, including as traffic signs and improved traffic lights, to enhance safety for all road users now that motorbike operations are permitted.
“The transport sector needs improvement on a daily basis. We do not have dedicated traffic signs for motor riders, but now that we have legalised their operations, going forward we are going to see some changes, including the kind of traffic lights we will be installing at various points,” he said.
Mr. Nikpe emphasised that discipline and enforcement are just as important to increasing road safety as infrastructure.
He made parallels with adjacent Togo and stated that personal discipline and law enforcement play a major role in the differences in road safety outcomes.
In order to guarantee more stringent enforcement of traffic laws, he advocated for a coordinated strategy among important ministries, such as Transport, Local Government, Interior, and Roads and Highways.
The Minister said that in an attempt to enforce discipline, violators would face penalties including having their cars seized and their driver’s licenses revoked.
As the industry undergoes reforms, Mr. Nikpe stated that the combined efforts are intended to improve road discipline, lower accident rates, and create a safer transportation environment.
