The deputy minister of lands and natural resources Hon Mireku Duker pays a working visit together with some Inspectors of Mines from the Minerals Commission, embarked on a working visit to Asanko Gold Mine, a subsidiary of Galiano Gold, which is a parity joint venture with Goldfields Ghana Limited in the Amansie west and south districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
The visit was to familiarize with their operations since active mining operations commenced after quite a period of operational hiatus.
Asanko Mine, which happens to be the only operating large-scale mine on the Asankragua Gold belt, consists of four (4) main open-pit mining areas, namely Abore, Miradani North, Nkran and Esaase.
At the Obotan Mine, the Managing Director of Asanko Mine, Dr Charles Amoah, took us through a detailed presentation on operational activities, corporate social responsibilities, and other stakeholder engagements.
The major challenge facing Asanko Mine today is the invasion of illegal miners on their concession, which is very alarming as I toured the concession.
Total employment stood at Two Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty-Five (2,735), with 99.7% being Ghanaians, of which 53% are from local catchment communities with three (3) expatriates. I was enthused with the local jobs and indicated that knowledge transfer must be quick for Ghanaians to replace the expats.
I reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure that all legal Mining Companies operate peacefully in the country and will, in that vein, ensure that Asanko Mines is protected against any form of invasion.
I urged Asanko Mines to deepen engagements with local stakeholders, increase footprint in terms of CSR, and, in a bid to clear illegal miners off their concession, earmark designated areas of their own choice to the various communities, notably, Tontokrom, Abore en co for community mining, to mitigate the wanton invasion of illegal miners on their concession.
I further tasked the MMDCEs of Amansie South and West districts who accompanied me, Hon. Clement Opoku Gyamfi and Hon. Nii Larteh Ollenu, respectively, to ensure Asanko operates within a peaceful regime.
Together, we shall build a resilient Mining sector.
Thank you.
