Gyakye Quayson will go to prison – KT Hammond – READ
The fate of Member of Parliament for Assin Central, James Gyakye Quayson, has been determined, to the Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir (KT) Hammond
Hammond stated that Gyakye Quayson would be facing imprisonment similar to former MP for Bawku Central, Adamu Dramani Sakande, who was incarcerated for falsely claiming Burkinabe and British citizenships.
In an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson on Oyerepa TV, Hammond emphasized the similarity between the cases of Adamu Sakande and Gyakye Quayson, citing a legal precedent.
He explained that Sakande, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was expelled from parliament by his own party and subsequently taken to court, resulting in imprisonment and his eventual passing.
Hammond drew a parallel between Sakande’s situation and Gyakye Quayson’s swearing-in controversy, advising him to leave parliament to avoid imprisonment.
Highlighting the legal ramifications, Hammond stated in Twi, “There is precedence, this is the same as the Adamu Sakande case.
Adamu was jailed for having multiple citizenships, and Quayson had the same issue. Now he (Quayson) has renounced his other citizenship, and he is only Ghanaian… but laws he broke previously is what we are talking about.”
Furthermore, Hammond criticized Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, for his opposition to the Supreme Court’s ruling that resulted in Quayson’s removal from office.
The Dormaahene had called upon the state to drop the criminal case against the Assin North MP. Hammond expressed his disapproval of the chief’s stance.
The remarks by KT Hammond shed light on the imminent legal consequences facing James Gyakye Quayson, drawing a parallel to a previous case involving Adamu Dramani Sakande.
While Gyakye Quayson renounced his other citizenship and now identifies solely as Ghanaian, the violations he committed in the past are under scrutiny.
Additionally, the Dormaahene for questioning the Supreme Court’s ruling and calling for the dismissal of the criminal charges against Quayson.
