The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV has stressed that he rejected money paid to him as ex-gratia by the Council of State secretariat because of his general abhorrence to the payment of huge sums of money to people who serve the country.
Last week it was reported that the successful businessman had returned some money he received from the state, with the argument that things are hard in the country.
Some reportage also had it that the payment to Togbe Afede XIV was just a trap set for him.
In a press release dated Monday, June 6, 2022, the respected Ghanaian businessman has provided clarity on the matter.
In his release, Togbe Afede XIV emphasises that he was uncomfortable after receiving the money because he thought it was inappropriate for the short part-time work he did for the Council of State.
“I did not think the payment was made to trap me, as is being speculated. I believe it was paid to everybody who served on the Council of State. However, I thought that extra payment was inappropriate for a short, effectively part-time work, for which I received a monthly salary and was entitled to other privileges. So, I was very uncomfortable with it,” Togbe Afede XIV noted in his release.
The businessman who has been trending in the last 12 hours concludes, “I want to add that my rejection of the payment was consistent with my general abhorrence of the payment of huge Ex Gratia and other outrageous benefits to people who have by their own volition offered to serve our poor country.”
