At Wassa Dunkwa in the Western Region’s Amenfi West Municipality, a 42-year-old woman and her three children perished in a galamsey pit filled with water.
According to a local source who spoke with Citi News, the incident happened on Saturday, February 28, when the family went looking for firewood next to an abandoned illegal mining site that had gotten severely flooded.
The report claims that after gathering firewood, the three boys, headed by their 14-year-old older brother, returned before their mother.
They stopped at the pit on the way back and got into the water.
When their mother arrived and realised her kids were in danger, she tried to save them but also ran into problems.
The Asankragwa Divisional Police subsequently retrieved the bodies of the four family members and placed them in the Catholic Hospital’s mortuary.
ASP Beatrice Turkson, the Western Central Police Command’s public relations officer, verified the occurrence and stated that investigations are still in progress.
A comprehensive statement would be released eventually, she continued.
