The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has reiterated that there will be no further extensions to the ongoing SIM card deactivation process.

She emphasized that the process has already been extended seven times and urged individuals with genuine concerns to reach out to the National Communications Authority (NCA) for assistance.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful provided an update on the deactivation process, revealing that 30 million SIM cards have been registered, while 7.9 million SIMs have been blocked.
She also mentioned that 201,800 cards have been reconnected following the deactivation deadline.
In terms of registration requirements, the Minister suggested that individuals who do not yet possess a Ghana card could seek the help of trusted associates to complete the registration process.

However, the Minority in Parliament has criticized the process, alleging discrimination and flaws that have prevented many Ghanaians from meeting the necessary requirements for SIM card re-registration. Consequently, they have called on the Ministry and the NCA to suspend the ongoing deactivation.
The concerns raised by the Minority highlight the challenges faced by individuals who have been unable to fulfill the registration criteria, thereby risking the deactivation of their SIM cards.
They argue that the process disproportionately affects certain segments of the population and should be paused until a more inclusive solution is implemented.
Despite the criticism, the Minister has defended the process, stating that the extensions have provided ample time for individuals to comply with the registration requirements. She encouraged those facing difficulties to seek assistance from the NCA, which can provide guidance and support.
As the SIM card deactivation process continues, it remains to be seen how the Ministry and the NCA will address the concerns raised by the Minority and ensure that all citizens have a fair opportunity to complete the registration process without facing unnecessary hurdles.
