Lassa Fever in Ghana. READ MORE
Health authorities are alerting the public about a new threat: Lassa fever, as Ghana continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Lassa virus is what causes Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever. It is unique to West Africa and is transmitted there by the common house rat, Mastomys natalensis. Humans can get the virus by coming into touch with infected rats or by handling materials that have been contaminated with their urine or feces.
Symptoms of Lassa fever include fever, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and rash. In severe cases, it can lead to bleeding from the eyes, mouth, and nose, as well as organ failure and death.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is urging people to take precautions to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. These include avoiding contact with rodents, keeping homes and workplaces clean, and washing hands regularly.
The GHS is also recommending that people seek medical attention if they experience any of the symptoms of Lassa fever. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to reduce the risk of serious complications.
In order to stop the virus from spreading, the Ghana Health Service also suggests that individuals maintain excellent hygiene. This entails cleaning hands with soap and water, covering the mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing, and keeping a distance from ill persons.
The GHS further advises individuals to exercise caution and notify the closest medical facility of any suspected Lassa fever cases.
The threats presented by other illnesses like Lassa fever must be kept in mind while the coronavirus pandemic continues to expand. People may contribute to lower the risk of catching the virus and safeguard themselves and their communities by heeding the recommendations of health professionals. Lassa Fever in Ghana.
