Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, has started a public awareness campaign to encourage merchants, store owners, and other interested parties to take part in tomorrow’s National Sanitation Day event.
The mayor called on merchants to participate completely in the cleanup effort in order to guarantee an early conclusion and allow stores to reopen on schedule. The campaign started at the Kinbu traffic light and proceeded via Tudu, Katamanto, and Makola Market, eventually reaching the forecourt of Accra City Hall.
Restoring cleanliness and order to the city could only be accomplished through collaborative activity, he underlined, adding that market women’s and traders’ involvement would increase the exercise’s efficacy.

Additionally, before the exercise officially begins tomorrow, Mayor Allotey instructed traders to start cleaning their surroundings and warned them to abide by the “Red Line Policy”, which governs trading operations on pedestrian pathways.
He issued a warning that a rigorous enforcement campaign would be conducted after the cleanup and that anyone who disobeys the Assembly’s sanitation bylaws will face arrest, legal action, and prosecution in order to maintain the hygiene improvements established during the exercise and act as a deterrence.

Background
Every month on the first Saturday, communities across the country are mobilised to rid their surroundings of dirt, lower health risks, and encourage sustainable urban living as part of the National Sanitation Day celebration.
As part of efforts to rid the city of filth, promote public health, and deepen shared responsibility for a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Accra, the exercise is in accordance with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Communal Labour) Bye-Laws, 2017, which were enacted pursuant to section 181 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). This law requires the Assembly to observe the first Saturday of each month as a National Sanitation Day.
