Media Foundation For West Africa, Media-Security Dialogue Held

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) on November 27, 2025 convened a Media-Security Dialogue in Accra to strengthen collaboration between journalists and security agencies in Ghana. The event brought together editors, reporters, media managers, civil society advocates, and senior security officials.

 

Participants discussed the current media-security landscape, challenges facing journalists, and opportunities for constructive engagement. Dora Boamah Mawutor, Programme Director at the MFWA, presented recent data on media-security incidents, followed by a keynote address on the importance of journalist safety as a foundation for transparency and democratic accountability, delivered by Dr. Gilbert Tietaah of the Department of Comm. Studies UG, University of Ghana.

 

DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate (PAD) of the Ghana Police Service, represented the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, as Guest of Honour and shared remarks on the Police Service’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom. Earlier, welcome statements were delivered by MFWA’s Executive Director, Sulemana Braimah, and GIZ Ghana’s Component Manager, Kweku Obeng.

 

A panel discussion featuring William Jalulah of The Fourth Estate, Della Russell Ocloo of the Daily Graphic, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, and David Tamakloe, President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana Private Newspaper Pulishers Association of Ghana., explored practical steps for countering impunity for attacks against journalists. The session was moderated by Gloria Hiadzi, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA).

 

The dialogue ended with a vibrant Q&A session that drew on the lived experiences of both journalists and security officials participating in the discussion.

 

This activity is under an MFWA project titled “Countering corruption through accountability journalism and improved freedom of expression environment in Ghana” which forms part of the Participation, Accountability, Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the EU and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance of Ghana.
