My man is a Christian, not a killer – Hillary Gardee’s alleged killers fiancee defends him
Sipho Mkhatshwa, the man suspected of murdering Hillary Gardee, spoke at his bail hearing this week in the Mbombela magistrate’s court, and his fiancée, Zandile Magagula, voiced her outrage over an SMS reportedly sent to police by a sangoma, which is thought to have led to his detention.
Mkhatshwa had demanded purification after confessing to Gardee’s murder, according to the SMS. Mkhatshwa allegedly indicated a desire to sell two albino children to the Mpumalanga sangoma for R2 million, according to the Mpumalanga sangoma. Albinism affects two of Magagula’s daughters.
The SMS was one of five messages the sangoma provided to Mpumalanga investigators alerting them to Mkhatshwa’s suspected participation in Gardee’s murder, according to a source close to the investigation.
The claims were disregarded by Magagula. “Sipho’s assertions that he sought to sell albino infants for R2 million are false. Sipho will never harm my daughters, I am certain of that. He’s never visited a sangoma before.”
She claimed Mkhatshwa had an alibi for the murder and detailed his movements on the day Gardee vanished and in the days that followed.
Mkhatshwa on Thursday handed in an affidavit to court and took to the stand to outline his movements at the time of Gardee’s disappearance and murder.
On Friday, before prosecutor Ntsika Mpolweni could continue his cross-examination, Mkhatshwa’s attorney Sebastian Bhila and advocate Sifiso Silindza recused themselves, citing a conflict of interest.
They declined to tell magistrate Eddie Hall what the conflict was, with Bhila stating that doing so would “prejudice both my client and myself”.
Silindza told the Sunday Times his former client denied consulting any sangoma in relation to the murder, or contemplating selling the two children with albinism.
