The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in partnership with the Accra World Book Capital (AWBC) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) organized a one day reading programme on Wednesday, 21 February, 2024 to sensitize students on the importance of reading in the local dialect thus the topic; International Mother Language Day. Sixteen districts of the NCCE in the Greater Accra Region were selected to engage a school within their jurisdiction.
In view of the above, the NCCE Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro which was also selected organized its reading campaign in one of the Ghanaian languages (Ga) at the Accra Sempe School, Jame Town. The programme commenced at 1pm in the afternoon.
The programme saw the likes of some eminent personalities in persons of Mr. Samuel Akuamoah (Deputy Chairman of NCCE) and Mr. Edward Yaw Udzu (Lawyer and AWBC committee member) who only did not come to grace the occasion with their presence but also advised the students.
Mr. Samuel Akuamoah (Dep. Chairman of NCCE) narrated a brief history of his past and how he could speak eleven local languages to motivate the students and to let them know that nothing is impossible achieve. He also challenged the students to read in order for them to discover and know things because there is a saying; if you want to hide something from the black man you put in books.
Mr. Edward Yaw Udzu (lawyer and ABWC committee member) encourage the students also to make a conscious effort to read because research has shown that the human mind is not programmed to read. So, until you make a conscious effort you will not be able to read.
The progamme was successful. It made the students see the relevance of learning and reading in our local languages.
