The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that all vehicles in Ghana will be issued new license plates starting on April 1, 2026.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) compliance is required for all new plates. The goal is to make sure that number plates can be scanned and digitally identified.

This will assist with speed camera reading, electronic road toll management, and many other tasks.

The DVLA states that the implementation of new license plates for all vehicles will be carried out in stages. New registrations will begin on January 1, 2026, and vehicles that are already registered will begin re-registering with the new plates on April 1, 2026.

Watch the DVLA’s details in the video below.

The DVLA previously said that, as of January 1, 2026, it will no longer display the year of registration on vehicle number plates for newly registered vehicles.

Instead, the new system will only identify vehicles by the region in which they were registered, such as “Greater Accra” written on the plate, followed by the vehicle’s unique four-digit number and a code that indicates the zone in which the vehicle was registered, according to Julius Neequaye Kotey, Chief Executive of the DVLA.

A car registered in Greater Accra’s Adenta zone, for instance, will have the “AD” code at the end of its four-digit unique number instead of the year of registration, such as “25” for 2025.

He has stated that the “DV” [Defective Vehicle] plates will also undergo a makeover.

He also stated that the goal is to help prevent and restrict the use of “DV” [Defective Vehicle] plates in the system, which are typically used by auto dealers for specific purposes, such as moving a car to a specific location for repairs or to give a prospective buyer a test drive.

However, he claimed that a large number of private citizens have been using DV plates year-round since they are reluctant to register their cars.

On social media, he posted a picture of the new DV plates and temporary (TMP) plates. He also mentioned that the DVLA was launching a new sticker for cars that aren’t yet suitable for usage on the road.

The goal of this project is to enhance the tracking and identification of all vehicles, including those that are not currently in use.
