Dr. Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has called on Ghanaians to view the stability and preservation of the cedi as a shared duty.
He emphasised that the local currency cannot be protected by a single institution.
At the Cedi @ 60 Conference in Accra, where policymakers, economists, and business executives convened to contemplate 60 years of the national currency, Dr. Asiama issued the call.
He described the future of the cedi as a shared national endeavour and urged everyone to participate fully in the talks.
“Protecting the cedi is not the task of any one institution. It is a shared endeavour rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future,” he stated.
The BoG Governor emphasised the need of unity and one purpose in strengthening the currency.
He noted that the cedi’s stability is determined not just by macroeconomic policy, but also by citizens’ everyday confidence.
According to him, every Ghanaian, from schoolchildren learning to count to traders and entrepreneurs driving local business, has a role to play in sustaining the currency.
The Governor expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic prospects, stating that the next 60 years offer an opportunity to rethink the cedi and strengthen the financial system.
He asked interested parties to offer suggestions that will help create a stable financial future.
Dr. Asiama asked for a revitalised sense of pride in the national currency and praised participants for their dedication.
His comments set the tone for the conference, which is a component of larger conversations about long-term economic reforms, exchange rate stability, and inflation control.
