A joint committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been established to examine the final recommendations made to the President by the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC).
The committee was tasked with presenting the party’s proposals to the CRC as part of the constitutional review process. It was jointly led by Hon. Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, and Frank Davies Esq., Chairman of the NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Committee.
But in a statement released on Tuesday, December 23, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye revealed that the committee has been instructed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, to review the final recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee and provide advice to the NPP’s National Council, the party’s second-highest decision-making body.
Hon. Hassan Tampuli, Hon. OB Amoah, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, and others are members of the joint committee.
While the committee’s investigation is ongoing, the party is advising members to exercise caution while commenting on the suggestions.
The major opposition party’s stance on the final CRC plans would be made public in due course, Nana B, as he is affectionately known, emphasised.
The final report of the eight-member Constitutional Review Committee, which President John Dramani Mahama appointed in January 2025, included extensive recommendations to strengthen Ghana’s governance structure and fill up the gaps left by previous constitutional amendments.
Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, the chair of the committee, presented the report to President Mahama during a ceremony on Monday, December 22, 2025. Mahama then ordered that the report be published and made public.
A proposal to increase the presidential term of office from four to five years while keeping the two-term restriction is one of the most important suggestions.
The committee contends that the modification would improve the stability of governance and give administrations enough time to create and carry out long-term initiatives.
Reforming local governance mechanisms is another major focus of the report. It suggests formally integrating traditional powers into local administration and electing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
