To achieve this, it must take bold steps toward financial independence and establish a firm framework for influencing governance in ways that align with its values and priorities…

The Case for Business Investments

The NPP has a massive following, as evidenced by its over four million votes in the last general election. This support base is not just a political asset but an untapped economic powerhouse. Drawing lessons from the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa, the NPP can venture into strategic business investments to secure its financial independence…

The ANC’s investment arm, Chancellor House, has stakes in industries such as mining, energy, and telecommunications, generating revenue to sustain the party. Similarly, the NPP can explore the following ventures:

1. Real Estate Development: Leveraging its influence to build affordable housing or commercial spaces.
2. Agribusiness: Investing in large-scale farming projects to tap into Ghana’s agricultural potential while creating jobs.
3. Media and Technology: Establishing media houses, digital platforms, or technology startups to shape narratives and generate revenue.
4. Banking and Financial Services: Creating a party-owned savings and loans company to serve its members and the general public.

5. Transportation Services: Setting up transport systems, such as commercial buses or ride-hailing services, to meet the growing mobility needs of Ghanaians. This can generate steady income while branding the party as a force for national development.
6. Drinking Water Production: Launching a bottled water brand to address the pressing need for safe drinking water in Ghana. This business not only has high profit potential but also resonates with the NPP’s commitment to health and well-being.

By diversifying into these sectors, the NPP can build a robust financial base to operate independently of government resources. This independence will allow the party to champion its ideals without being compromised by financial constraints or external pressures…

Being a Responsible Parent

The NPP must recognize that when in government, it is the parent that births and nurtures governance. A responsible parent does not abdicate their role simply because their child has grown and is financially independent. Instead, they provide consistent guidance, ensuring the child (the government) acts in the best interests of the family (the party) and the wider community (Ghanaians)…

This principle requires the NPP to establish mechanisms for holding its government accountable. It must foster internal structures that encourage:

• Policy Alignment: Ensuring government policies reflect the party’s manifesto promises and long-term vision.
• Constructive Criticism: Creating platforms where party leadership and membership can constructively critique government actions without fear of backlash when in government.
