The leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has advocated for the non-pay of their stipends for about ten months. On May 24, 2024, Ghanaian Students took to the streets of Rabat, Morocco to complain about their unpaid stipend, which is consequently having ravaging effects on their lives.
Speaking at a news conference held in Accra, the President of NUGS, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh express worrisome about the alarming and unacceptable. Ghanaian Students whom our country undoubtedly has a duty to protect, are on the verge of being evicted from their accommodations, struggling to renew their residence permit and are unable to obtain basic needs such as food and sanitary products.
The union appeal to the Ministry of Education, Chief of Staff, and female parliamentarians to step into the matter.
It is an irrefutable fact, that the Student Loan Trust Fund is a critical lifetime for many students in Ghana. It has quite unfortunately come to NUGS notice, that there have been numerous complaints regarding delays in the disbursement of loans and the high compounding interest rates.
These issues have placed undue financial burdens on students, which hamper their academic progress and overall well-being.
Oppong Kyeremeh was optimistic that NUGS engagement with the SLTF leadership and proffered proposals to address concerns of speeding up loan payments and also expedite the disbursement of loans to beneficiaries to ensure that students receive the financial support they need in a timely manner.
