The sudden death of veteran musician Alfred Benjamin Crentsil, better known as AB Crentsil, has thrown the country into a state of mourning especially music lovers.
The 79-year-old has a long history of creating great musical tunes that continue to inspire generations.
His death was confirmed in a Facebook post by Fred Kyei Mensah better known as Fredyma, a sound engineer, on Wednesday, July 13, 2022.
“FAREWELL AB CRENSTIL. The original composer and singer of the famous and controversial songs, ‘Moses and Atia’, AB Crenstil, has died! He had a stint with a lot of bands before joining the Sweet Talks Band with Smart Nkansah and then his own band, Ahenfo. His hit songs, ‘Juliana and Obi ba wiase’, cannot be forgotten,” those were the touching words in his post.
One netizen who was taken aback by the sad news revealed that he had just played a song of the celebrated singer on Tuesday, July 12, a day before his sudden death.
“Oh I was even playing his music yesternight…ooooh hmmm rest easy.
“Legendary…forever in my heart,” the netizen wrote.
Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Jr was born in 1943 in Prestea, in the western region, to the late Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Sr and Esi Yaaba.
He received his primary education in Takoradi, the Western Regional capital, where he was introduced to guitar playing by a friend.
In the early 1970s, he co-founded SWEET TALKS INTERNATIONAL BAND in Tema, and in the mid-1970s, he founded AHENFO INTERNATIONAL BAND.
Adam & Eve, Wowu Obi Baa Wiase, Soldier Lafia, You Devil (Anny3), Atia, Landford Abogyese, Juliana, Angelina, Memba Bio, Ma me ndwe Me ho, I go pay you tomorrow, and Mbesia fo eya wo ntor nsa are some of his hit songs.
