Ahmed Ibrahim Bambila, the Ghana AIDS Commission’s (GAC) regional technical coordinator for Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo, claims that more than 19,000 people in the Bono Region have HIV and AIDS.
He added that 875 new HIV infections were reported in the area. He called the numbers “alarming” and called for more robust, coordinated measures to address the root causes in order to stop the spread.
On Thursday, November 20, 2025, Bambila gave a speech at the opening of the Ghana AIDS Commission’s Bono Regional Committee (RECCOM) in Sunyani.
Under the direction of Bono Regional Minister Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the recently established nine-member group is meant to oversee and manage HIV-related initiatives in the area to reduce infections and improve care.
Bambila pointed out that a number of variables, such as low condom usage, multiple sexual partners, stigma and discrimination, inadequate sexual health education, migration, transactional sex, and restricted access to HIV services, continued to fuel HIV transmission in the area.
The Bono Region’s HIV prevalence among individuals aged 15 to 49 was 2.22 percent, which is higher than the national average, according to the 2024 Regional HIV Estimates.
In order to lessen stigma, encourage safe sexual behavior, and increase access to testing and treatment, Bambila called on community actors, health organizations, civil society organizations, and traditional authorities to step up their advocacy and education efforts.
