The University of Ghana has been ordered by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament to retrieve money that was purportedly given to senior employees who took study leave but did not return to their positions for more than five years.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, stated that the organisation had already started procedures to collect the unpaid sums from the impacted parties.
“Mr. Chairman, we have made some recoveries in this regard; some are fully paid, some are on payment plans, and there are a few cases where we have not made progress in contacting the individuals, for which we have sought the support of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO),” she said.
The statements were given by Professor Appiah Amfo on Wednesday during her appearance before the PAC in Parliament House, Accra.
In addition to the funds paid during study leave, the university is also recovering GH₵555,283 in unearned salaries, with some cases being pursued with the assistance of the EOCO.
To avoid such financial anomalies in the future, PAC has asked the university to strengthen internal monitoring mechanisms and speed up the restitution procedure. This action is a component of initiatives to guarantee responsibility and appropriate use of public funds in Ghana’s public institutions.
