Finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has been reminded to submit to Parliament an account of proceeds from the 2.5% NHIS levy and all other funds received for NHIA purposes.
The minister has also been tasked to pay the 2.5% on goods and services to the NHIA within 30 days after collection, thus; every month.
Dr. Solomon Owusu, a mining consultant and a political activist in the United States made these calls to the minister, after reportage of the NHIA receiving GHc50 million from Government to facilitate their activities.
According to Dr. Owusu, the NHIA would have been effective if proceeds are properly and wholly paid into their account in order to get rid of the numerous complaints by health providers.
He stated “Look at the malls, supermarkets, hotels and other public places that charge the 2.5% NHIS levy from the goods people purchase, yet still the scheme is still suffering. What is the money being used for”?
He also blamed the leadership of Parliament for keeping silent on the issue despite the constitutional provision that requires the House to have knowledge of the state of the proceeds every six months.
Dr. Solomon Owusu, however, advised the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annor Dompreh and other members in Government not to boast of the donation but rather work hard to deal with the numerous challenges facing the scheme.
