Former President John Dramani Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) government terminated the honorarium for student nurses, as many Ghanaians are aware. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) assured them in 2016 that if they gave him the mandate, he would return the allowance.
President Akufo-Addo has kept his word, but the allowance is fraught with controversy. The student nurses in your photo have videotaped themselves complaining about their stipend not being paid on time. If you look closely at the video, you will see three lovely student nurses in their uniforms giving a message to President Akufo-Addo.
The lady closer to the camera was overheard on the video saying, “Please, President Nana Addo, we have started our clinical. Please, we badly need our allowances. We know you are a good man, please act quickly and pay our allowances. It is not easy for us”. The next lady seated closer to her. According to her friends, she is called Benedict. She also said, “My transportation alone is GH¢12.00 daily, what I will eat is not included. Please, Mr. President, do your best and pay us quick, we are suffering”.
Some Ghanaians after coming across the video busted into laughter. They stated that President Akufo-Addo had no intention to pay student nurse allowance, he only restored it because he wanted their votes to win the elections. So now that there is no election before him, he is not under any pressure to pay the allowance. Others advised these nurses to find another source of income to finance their education because it will possible that their allowances will not be paid or will be delayed for a very long time.
