People’s faith in ORAL to combat corruption is waning

Daniel Yaw Domelevo, a former auditor general, has cautioned that public trust in Ghana’s governance system is progressively declining, citing what he calls lax enforcement and a lack of repercussions in cases involving corruption under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) project.

Domelevo voiced concern that many Ghanaians no longer think corruption cases will result in justice, particularly when they involve influential individuals, in an interview with Joy News PM Express.

He claims that the nation’s democratic and accountability mechanisms are at risk from this expanding perception.

In his remarks, Domelevo urged the Attorney-General (AG) to prosecute corruption charges with greater vigour and independence.

He maintained that selective prosecutions, case closures, or delays give residents the wrong impression and encourage misbehaviour.

“My expectation is the same as I’ve been saying, you should fight corruption from the top,” he said. “So you should take the high-profile cases, pick the big ones, prominent ones, and move with speed.”

Ghana already has robust legislation and monitoring procedures, but enforcement is the issue, the former Auditor-General underlined.

Regardless of political pressure, he emphasised that organisations like the Attorney General’s Department must exhibit courage and constancy.

Additionally, Domelevo pointed out that inadequate public services, shelved initiatives, and misappropriated public cash are all consequences of corruption.

He cautioned that persistent inaction might erode civic engagement and increase public mistrust.

“Because people are losing hope,” he continued, “People are losing confidence. People think it’s going to be business as usual. Nothing is going to happen.”

He stated that by avoiding a piecemeal approach to investigations and prosecutions, the Attorney-General’s office must show capacity and urgency.

Ghanaians are eager to learn what the Attorney General is doing to hold those who have embezzled public funds responsible, and Domelevo’s responses coincide with this.
