Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Barcelona striker, has announced his retirement from international football. The 32-year-old Gabonese international played 72 times and is the country’s all-time leading scorer with 30 goals.
“After 13 years of representing my country with pride, I announce the end of my international career,” the 32-year-old wrote in an open letter to Gabonese fans.
“I’d like to thank the Gabonese people and everyone who has supported me in both good and bad times.
“I will cherish many happy memories, such as the day I made my romnisports debut or returned from Nigeria with the African Ballon d’Or.
“It was an unforgettable experience to share it with everyone. I would like to thank our President, His Excellency Ali Bongo Ondimba, who has always supported the Panthers and worked hard for football to grow in our country.
“I’d also like to thank all of my coaches, staff, and players who I’ve met throughout my career.
“Finally, I thank my father for instilling in me the desire to emulate him, and I hope that by wearing our colors, I have made him proud.”
On Tuesday, May 17, Gabon’s Football Federation said it received a letter from Aubameyang informing it of his decision to retire.
After representing France at the youth level, the former Arsenal striker switched to senior football and became the country’s record scorer, scoring 30 goals in 72 appearances since his debut in 2009.
