Police Officers forced to request for back up after suspect they went to arrest open fire
Police officers on Sunday escaped death by a whisker after a suspect opened fire at them. Two police officers had gone to arrest a suspect, only for them to be attacked by the suspect’s armed friend.
According to a police report filed at the Lokori Police Station, two police constables Samuel Waweru and Edwin Maina went to arrest a suspect of an assault case namely Joseph Ewalan, 28, within the outskirts of Lokori township.
However, while they were about to corner the suspect and take him to custody, his friend, Kan’gasaricho Loseny aged 35 years emerged and opened fire at the officers.
PC Edwin Maina sustained a gunshot wound on his hand, forcing the officers to request a backup from a nearby police station and GSU camp.
The security reinforcement team arrived in time but the suspect and his armed friend had already managed to escape from the crime scene.
“It was established that the two suspects escaped into the nearby thicket immediately after the incident.
The area is still being combed by the joint security team for the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the illegal firearm used,” read the police report in part.
The shooting of the officer comes a day after another GSU officer was shot and killed by bandits in Laikipia County.
Bandits have remained to be a thorn in the flesh of the country’s security. The government has been calling out the bandits to surrender their illegal firearms but their efforts are yet to yield fruit.
