Four alleged robbers were killed in a gunfight with police when the Tema Regional Police Command stopped an attempted armed robbery at Afienya-Mataheko.
At a press conference on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dede Dzakpasu, the Command’s Head of Public Affairs, stated that the operation was a part of ongoing efforts to dismantle a notorious robbery gang that was thought to have been active in Tema and the surrounding areas for a number of years.
She revealed that authorities were informed on December 27, 2025, that a group of formerly incarcerated individuals were preparing to commit armed robberies in the city.
Officers were sent to the area and put under observation based on the information.
According to ASP Dzakpasu, four suspects were seen trying to break into a residential residence in Afienya-Mataheko early on December 29 at around 1:00 a.m.
She reports that when the criminals saw there were police, they started shooting, which prompted the policemen to retaliate.
Yaro Bawku, Faisal, and Kwabena Azuwebi, also known as Lastman, were the three suspects who were shot and sent to the Police Hospital, where they were declared dead.
She also mentioned that Kassim Hussein, the fourth suspect, was eventually taken into custody after originally escaping despite being shot.
After that, he passed away while getting medical attention.
All four of the murdered criminals were on the police wanted list and had been connected to multiple robberies in the area, according to ASP Dzakpasu.
“It would be recalled that one of the suspects, Kwabena Azuwebi alias Lastman, was recently granted bail by a court in a robbery case after a long period on remand,” she said.
An AK-47 rifle, a Taurus handgun with six rounds of ammunition, two cutlasses, and two Royal motorcycles—one unregistered and the other with registration number M-25-GT-4243—that were allegedly utilised by the suspects were all found by the police.
The remains of the deceased suspects have been placed at the Police Hospital Mortuary for autopsy, according to ASP Dzakpasu, while all exhibits have been kept for additional investigations.
Investigations to find potential collaborators and establish connections to other illegal activity are still underway, she continued.
